Programs & Apps
Various programs and apps to help study, practice for, or play karuta!
Note: there may also be Japanese or other versions not listed. If you’re interested and can’t find them yourself, try asking in the Discord server under “Social” resources! Someone may be able to help you.
Desktop:
Inaba-kun – Page | Direct Download – there is an English version of the app in this download called “naniwazu_e”. As far as I know, it only works on Windows.
Karuta for Tabletop Simulator – Page – not really familiar with this, but listing in case someone finds it useful. Requires the “Tabletop Simulator” game on Steam to function.
Mobile:
Competitive Karuta ONLINE – Apple Store | Google Play | Official Site
- Doesn’t just let you play an online/game version of karuta for practice on listening, the flow of the game, etc., but also has the ability to look at/listen to all the poems, a flashcard (“fudanagashi”) option, and a purchasable “branching cards” mini-game to help practice “kikiwake” (telling sounds apart, e.g. for tomofuda/”friend cards”).
Recite Karuta – Apple Store | Official Site
- For playing the poems, e..g to play a game with. A paid app, but very quality in my opinion, with various features. Made by the same developer as the Competitive Karuta ONLINE app above. Has multiple readers and tracks your games.
Karuta Chant – Apple Store | Google Play | Official Site
- Another app for reciting the poems. Made by Masayoshi Kawase, a Meijin! Free as well.
Karuta Log – Apple Store | Google Play | Official Site
- Another app by Masayoshi Kawase, a Meijin. This one helps you track your karuta playing and give statistics on your play.
